In anything. Period. You will never see the captain of a ship set sail without plotting the course or setting sail and allowing the ship to drift to its destination while he puts his feet up. The ship will be lost in the vast ocean and he will change course and return to the start of the journey much like anyone who doesn’t have a plan.

He will have a plan. Just like you should if you are to achieve any level of success in anything. In past columns, we have spoken about how you need to be S.M.A.R.T when setting goals.

S - Specific. M - Measurable. A - Attainable/Action. R - Realistic. T - Timeline.

Let’s look at it like a journey in a car. Be specific in where you are headed. Measure how far that journey is.

In order for it to be attainable, you need to take action and start the journey. Be realistic about how long you need to be driving toward your destination without taking a rest. How long will it take to get there, time wise. This is a plan.

Once you have your plan, you can begin to take that journey towards success. In business. In fitness. In your relationships. In your education. Along your journey, you will encounter obstacles that may force you to reconsider whether it’s really worth going where you are headed. Do not lose faith in your plan. You can always detour but never ever change the end result. Your goal.

This is a crucial point in goal setting. Once someone encounters adversity, they will use excuses to tell themselves why it won’t work. There is no Plan B. Take that detour to get around the obstacle in your path, but get back onto your original course at the earliest opportunity.

Once you overcome obstacles, it will give you the confidence to overcome any other potential sticking points you may experience on the journey toward your goal. Embrace them, and get around them. Above all, bear this in mind. Persistence always beats resistance.
