The naked truth behind dangers to horse riders

The other Saturday saw around 30 horses parading through Morecambe town centre (which is not something you often see) but even more unusually, their riders were semi-naked.

I know at least one local councillor raised concerns about this, I guess they felt these riders were going to corrupt the townsfolk. I think it’s a brilliant way to highlight their concerns about the dangers which equestrians face on our roads.

When Carla had her horse stabled in Overton she had a number of ‘near misses’, most of which were due to drivers who were unaware, or unconcerned, of the nature of horses. I know Carla’s horse could be fine when a 40ft articulated lorry thundered by but could be spooked by a crisp packet blowing across the road! Carla’s horse is now based at Slyne and so she is lucky she can ride out along various bridleways, however, horse owners and riders in the more urban areas still have to share the roads with motor vehicles, and I totally understand they need to highlight the dangers associated with this.

If there were a horse large enough, I would have even considered it myself. Unfortunately there wasn’t so I just had tag along and watch.

Carla and I attended the RAF Association’s Wings Appeal event, at St Barnabas.

It was organised by Jane and Bob Latin, whom Carla and I met through their involvement with the carnival, and they kindly invited us along. Morecambe Brass Band provided the main entertainment performing celebratory musical pieces, with some solo numbers from soprano Louise Geatch. It was a very enjoyable evening and capped off nicely when Carla won a bottle of malt in the raffle.

The association is holding a Battle of Britain Service today (September 20th), also at St Barnabas, so I think we’ll pop along to that and have a go in that raffle, too. Fr Tom will be surprised to see me twice in two weeks! A date for your diaries: on November 4 Morecambe’s public bonfire and firework display will be returning. We are having a bonfire in the former Dome Arena, live entertainment, food and drink and then a firework display around 9pm.

We will be encouraging community groups and schools to enter a ‘best Guy Fawkes’ competition with the winning entry having the honour of being perched on top of the fire while the other entries will be placed lower down.

If anyone has any wood they would like to donate for the bonfire, please get in touch. The event will be free to attend so come along and enjoy the entertainment.
