Column: Sailing among Scotland's picture postcard scenery

On our second day in Scotland, we woke to a pink-hued dawn and enjoyed a delicious breakfast before making plans for the day.

Looking out at the sea loch from the prom and watching the ferry glide out towards the island of Kerrera, we decided it would be perfect to take a boat trip to one of the islands.

Kerrera was a possibility, as it has links with the MacDougall clan and I’m keen to see Gylen castle, which you can’t see from the mainland.

Iona was also on our minds; a place of spiritual sanctuary and beauty.

However, on this occasion, we headed to the island of Mull.

Travelling on CalMac ferries, the journey took around 40 minutes.

All the way, breathtaking views of Kerrera and Oban, then Lismore isle. Perched at the end stands a white lighthouse which you pass before heading out towards Mull.

Although slightly overcast, it was still gorgeous and captivating.

Looking back to the mainland around Oban, you have stunning views of mysterious Dunollie castle, seat of the MacDougall clan, high upon a steep rocky incline, all clad in the gorgeous autumnal trees.

On arriving at Craignure, Mull, we took a bus to the small picturesque town of Tobermory.

The famously colourful houses and cute shops sit by a marina and we discovered a delicious seafood cafe where we scoffed fish pie for lunch.

After a walk we headed to the aquarium which was fascinating, there by the sea, having spent a few minutes in the mouth watering chocolate shop!

Lovely place Tobermory, so we took our photos then it was time to return by bus to the ferry.

On the way, the sunshine bathed the island and we enjoyed views of bracken moors, inlets by the sea and isolated cottages.

The road wound through tiny villages near a rocky shore. It was very evocative, and we vowed to return as soon as possible to explore the other parts.

The ferry back seemed to go faster and was complete with off duty Highland bobby on the upper deck.

After a short walk along the prom, we made for the hotel.

We looked forward to further explorations. Lovely.
