As our politicians wrangle and ruminate over whether we should stay or leave Europe, that Clash song, ‘Should I sStay or Should I Go’ is running around my head on a loop.
Believe it or not, I’ve had wobbles and wonderments about the ‘what ifs’ and wherefores too, but as the big day of decision approaches, I am now pretty certain which way I’m going to vote.
Although not a huge fan of limitless immigration - purely on a practical level, given that our beloved island isn’t a huge land mass with endless resources – I have to face facts that I too have enjoyed trotting across the wee channel to enjoy living and working in another European country.
More to the point, I did this with relative ease and not too much hassle with red tape. With my EHIC card in bag, and no Visa requirements , I just booked my flight and went to live like the local population, no problem at all.
Would it be so easy with Brexit? I doubt it.
I know there is the argument that both trade and working in Europe could continue regardless, but I’m pretty sure the bureaucratic cogs would be a nightmare to unravel, like a big brick wall there in front of us requiring headaches full of navigation.
My thoughts are with the future generations here too. I’ll be racing around with my Zimmer frame soon with more enthusiasm for a nice cup of tea than European adventures, but what about their needs? Perhaps they would like to experience the freedom to move easily across Europe as well.
I’m not sure I fancy a ‘Little Britain’ either.
Life is more interesting – if sometimes challenging – when we mix it up a little and add other cultures to our own, though there must be balance in this and as aforementioned, excessive immigration is not helpful to anyone. This needs to be reasonable.
In addition, I think we are stronger and safer 'in' than 'out', however, strong checks should be held in place as our security is paramount.
A huge decision for us all with long reaching repercussions.
We all need to think long and hard about this as it is probably the biggest decision we have had to make in our lifetimes, regarding our country.
So go with your heart, but also your with head...
