New Year’s Eve is by far the busiest night of the year for the police and we have extra staff on duty tonight both in our Contact Management Department answering our emergency and non-emergency telephone lines and out on the streets attending all manner of incidents.

As an example in a normal 24-hour period we receive around 500 emergency telephone calls but on New Year’s Eve last year in the 7-hours after midnight we received 1700 emergency calls, a substantial increase in demand.

You can help us to ensure that everyone in Lancashire has a safe New Year’s Eve by only ringing 999 when there is a genuine emergency; unlike the person who rang us last year on 999 asking for a lift home from the pub, the person who rang us on 999 to wish us a Happy New Year or the person who rang us on 999 about fireworks going off at midnight.

If you need to contact the police tonight and it is not an emergency you can speak to us using the 101 non-emergency telephone service and you can now contact us online to report non-emergency incidents or crimes, lost and found property, to contact an officer already dealing with your case, to complain about your service and to say thank you to our staff at https://doitonline.lancashire.police.uk/ .

Enjoy your evening, wherever you may be spending it, and we hope that you have a happy and prosperous 2015.
