New-look town is shaping up

Although some businesses have experienced disruption during work to improve the pavements, most are 
positive that the completed result will be good for Morecambe.

The current works in Morecambe are due to be completed by the end of June with the aim to better connect the town centre and seafront, increase footfall and benefit business and trading.

Construction and renovation works on the former Visitor newspaper building on Victoria Street are progressing well, according to 
Stuart Clayton, chief executive for Galloway’s, who own the building.

Stuart said: “Work is going really positively, and we are looking to be fully open by the beginning of 
September, when the cafe will open.

“We have to put the front of the building back to how it would have looked.

“The frontage has now been painted and there shouldbe windows in by the end of next week.

“We are still deliberating on the name for the cafe but we have a shortlist.

“There is a lot of work to do but it is very exciting times.”

Simon Hodkinson, area manager for Subway, which has a shop in Morecambe near the Arndale, said of the streetworks: “The main thing has been people trailing dust in but we have kept the doors closed. Any regeneration in 
Morecambe is good.

“I think there are only two weeks left of the work now anyway.”

Cassie Roberts, office manager at JDG Estate Agents in Morecambe, said: “It’s only been a short term disruption but it is going to be good in the long term.”

Lindsay Higham, volunteer at Wolfwood charity shop, said: “It’s just the timing, why pick summer?”

Cath Evans from the Welcome Cafe in Morecambe’s Arndale Centre, said: “It will be fantastic when it 
is finished.”
