THE new mayor of Lancaster officially donned her robes at a special ceremony which took place on Friday (May 10).

Coun June Ashworth took over as the Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Lancaster from Coun Sheila Denwood in front of a packed Ashton Hall in Lancaster.

Coun Ashworth, who was first elected to the Bare ward in Morecambe in 1991, will be supported throughout her mayoral year by her daughter, Alex, as mayoress. Her mayoral charities for the forthcoming year are Morecambe RNLI and the North West Air Ambulance.

The first public engagement of her mayoral year will be the traditional Mayor’s Sunday service, which will be held on June 2 at the Priory Church.

The service starts at 11.30am and everyone is welcome to attend.

Commenting on the year ahead, Coun Ashworth said: “During my year of office my priority is to engage with as many organisations and citizens within the Lancaster district as possible and act as an ambassador encouraging tourism and investment into the area.”

Deputy Mayor and Mayoress for the forthcoming year are Coun David Kerr and his wife Paula.
