At the end of 1916 and 1917 the Lancaster Guardian published pictures of all who fell in the preceding year, they are very powerful images of two of the bloodiest years of the War.
Every week of course the Guardian carried pictures and obituaries of the fallen as well as more war news.
Lancaster was particularly affected in 1915 and 1917 as these were the times when local Battalions were involved in major offensives.
1918 was the bloodiest year for the Army as a whole on the western front due to the German offensives of the early part of the war and the Allied offensive beginning in August 1918.
Nor was the Lancaster Guardian itself immune from tragedy – several local newspaper reporters were killed in the war as manpower needs swept through the nation.
Shaun would be pleased to hear from relatives of anyone in the pictures or from anyone wishing to know more.
