Carnforth firefighter who saved man’s life receives award for his bravery

A Carnforth firefighter has been commended for his actions saving a man trapped underneath a HGV.

Firefighter Graeme Metcalfe was presented with a Chief’s Commendation Award by area manager John Rossen at Carnforth fire station.

This was for the incident which happened on September 2 at Forton Services on the M6 in which a pedestrian in his 80s suffered significant injuries after he was involved in a collision with a Volvo HGV.

He immediately ran over to stop the HGV driver and prevent further escalation, subsequently saving him.

He then provided support, reassurance and first hand first aid until emergency services arrived.

Fire crews used air bags and rams to release the casualty, who was then passed on to the care of ambulance crews.

Crews were at the scene for over two hours freeing the trapped man.
