In November 2000, Dave visited Ward 23 at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary – now known as part of the Castle View unit - and which, 26 years later, is facing closure.
“I was told that access to such subjects as hospitals would not be allowed. Not so,” wrote Dave in his photographer’s diary.
“A few phone calls and a sister- in-law in charge of a ward was enough power to get the permission desired from higher quarters.”
Ward 23 is now one of two wards specialising in rehabilitation and therapy to prepare often elderly patients to return home due to close as part of the ‘right care, right place’ initiative.
A Little English City is still available in Lancaster at Waterstones, the Proper Lovely Shop, Lancaster Maritime Museum and Assembled Books, priced £14.99.
