THE resort’s premier muscle man is ready to take on the world.
Graham Hicks has been invited to the World’s Strongest Man in Los Angeles in around a month’s time.
The competition, the pinnacle of strongman, will complete the Morecambe man’s rapid rise to the top of the sport just two-and-a-half years after taking it up. The 26-year-old former Britain’s Strongest Man under 105kg said: “There’s only been one other Englishman who has gone from 105 to World’s Strongest Man and I’ve done it in the same year.
“I did my last 105 event in March and now I’m doing opens and the world’s. It’s a bit crazy.
“I’m not hoping for anything I’m just going to enjoy the experience and learn from it.
“I’ve gone from mid-level 105 to World’s Strongest Man. It’s like a fairytale for me.
“I still don’t quite understand how I’m going. I’m just living the dream really.”
And to get ready for it he’s been getting help from dad John, branch manager of Travis Perkins in Morecambe, who is letting his son train by pulling trucks on the Euston Road site.
“It could end up being an event in LA. It’s on the list of what might be at the moment,” said Hicks who will be travelling to America for the first time.
“I got the idea and just rang him up. I’ve been doing it for a bit now.”
Hicks’ latest taste of international competition came in Lithuania at the weekend, where he came seventh.
“The guys there were all really experienced and had done World’s Strongest Man for years.
“It was difficult as well because I couldn’t talk to anyone! They all just talk to each other in their own languages!”
World’s Strongest Man starts on September 24 and will be broadcast on Channel 5 over Christmas.
