Menswear store goes through changes to boost sales

Greenwoods, in Market Street, Lancaster, will close at the end of January due to high rent meaning the store was no longer viable.

One of the three members of staff is expected to join the team at the Morecambe ship in Euston Road, where trade has gone from strength to strength since a ‘clearance’ range was intorduced in the summer.

Morecambe shop manager Neil Holroyd said: “Changes have been made to our shop and the one in Redcar.

“Over the summer we sold so much stock; people were coming to the shop first thing in the morning and waiting for us to open up because they knew they could be getting some bargains.

“We have been sent stock that isn’t moving in other shops. People have thought we are closing because of the ‘clearance’ signs but we are definitely not.”

There are 75 branches of Greenwoods across the country, and it is believed the retailers have been in Morecambe for at least 80 years, although there is no official record of the shop opening. One member of staff has worked at the store for 26 years.

“We engage with our customers and get to know them really well,, which I think puts us ahead of some of the chain stores,” Neil added.

“We offer a personal touch and we also have stock in a much wider range of sizes.

“For example, we sell shirts from 34ins right up to 54ins chest.

“The Morecambe shop is very different from the Lancaster one, and it’s doing far more positively now too.”

“We get tourists coming in as well as locals, because a lot of hotels use our shop when they are giving directions to tourists.”
