Market Square to transform into Alice in Wonderland world

The city centre will be transformed into an Alice in Wonderland world when actors from Lancaster’s Grand Theatre transform Market Square on Good Friday.

Using astro turf to recreate the Queen’s lawn, the scene will be complete with props from the film such as the famous Alice teacups, giant chess set, giant Connect Four, card games and a game of the Queen’s favourite croquet.

For Disney fans of any age it really will be a spectacle to see, with five of the main characters from the film walking around, playing croquet, chatting to visitors and entertaining the children.

There will also be an Easter raffle, with prizes up for grabs including theatre tickets for The Grand’s “Life of Riley” opening night, tickets to The Duke’s play in the park “The Hobbit” and other Easter goodies, including donations from Arteria.

The event is the idea of the Lancaster BID’s Events Manager, Rachael Wilkinson.

She said: “This Easter is a strange one, as many of the schools are off at different times but the four day Easter weekend is a bank holiday for everyone. I wanted to provide something in the centre of Lancaster that families could enjoy together.

On Easter Monday along with shopping, visitors to the city centre are treated to a ‘Mini Farm’ at Dalton Square.

Adorable animals will be in Dalton Square where children are welcome to pet the farmyard friends which includes a selection of sheep, goats, chickens, ponies, pigs and ducks. Like “Alice in Lancaster” this event is free of charge and there’s no need to pre-book. Face painting will also be available, as well as a children’s colouring competition, so there’s something to suit everyone on this fun family friendly day out!

Alongside these two free events there is lots more going on in Lancaster over the Easter weekend.

Meet the Makers will be on in St Nics Shopping Centre from March 26-28. This event sees a delightful mix of local handmade artists and crafters gathered under one roof, where you can join in with a special Easter egg hunt on Easter Monday to win some special prizes.

Saturday will see the Charter Market return to the city centre streets where you can purchase local food and goods.

On Sunday, Ballet Theatre UK present their tale of Pinocchio at The Grand Theatre. Starting at 3pm, tickets to this event start at £16 and available to pre book from the Grand.
