An elderly man and a woman have been taken to hospital after a car left the M6 and rolled down an embankment near Forton.
The Vauxhall Corsa careered off the southbound carriageway near junction 33 at about 2.15pm, Lancashire Police said.
A 76-year-old man and a woman were rescued from the car by firefighters and taken to the Royal Preston Hospital.
The extent of their injuries are unknown at present but an air ambulance was scrambled to the scene.
Police said a dog inside the car had also been injured and the RSPCA had been called.
The accident caused traffic disruption on the busy stretch of motorway throughout the afternoon.
One lane of the M6 between junction 33 and 32 was expected to be closed until around 6pm, the Highways Agency said.
