M6 Link: Junction to close overnight for essential roadworks

An overnight closure of the M6 southbound carriageway between junctions 35-34 is required from 10pm on Saturday 17 October 17 to 6am the following morning to allow the installation of traffic management required on the motorway as part of the reconfiguration of junction 34.

During the closure traffic travelling south on the M6 will be diverted off the motorway at junction 35 (Carnforth), southbound traffic will then be diverted along the A6 to Caton Road (A683) in Lancaster, they will then re-join the motorway via junction 34.

Diversion signs will be erected on the M6 prior to the junction on the southbound carriageway, its important drivers familiarise themselves with alternative routes, and plan their journeys ahead.

Engineers will install a southbound lane one closure and hardshoulder closure on the approach to junction 34 and beyond the entry slip until March 2016.

The closure will provide a safe working area for Costain to create the new southbound sliproads, and eventually remove the current ones.

Costain Community Relations Officer Antony Crowley said, “The new temporary setup will allow construction to continue on the ties-in to the new southbound sliproads to the M6.

“Its important driver adhere to the 50mph speed limit through junction 34 to give themselves time to read and understand the layout and traffic management signage”

The Lancashire County Council road project started in January of last year and is due to be completed by summer 2016. The improvements around junction 34 include the improved motorway slip roads and a 600-space park and ride site just off the junction and work on these is now underway.
