Link road bridge work due to finish

A major bridge on the new Heysham to M6 link road is almost complete.

The final sections of the Lune West Bridge over the River Lune at Halton were being lifted into place on Wednesday.

The 211m bridge is one of the most dramatic of the 13 to be built along the length of the new £124.5m road.

The bridge, which contains more than 2,300 tonnes of steelwork with approximately 55,000 bolts, will be completed five weeks behind schedule.

Delays were blamed on high winds, crane breakdowns and waiting for parts to be shipped from Europe.

One of the UK’s largest mobile cranes, a 1200-tonne Gottwald AK-680-3, was used to lift beams into place.

The road, which will connect the M6 at Junction 34 to the Heysham bypass, is due to be completed in summer 2016.
