Leading literary critic to take part in Lancaster University’s 50th anniversary celebrations

Professor Eagleton, Distinguished Professor of English Literature at Lancaster, will discuss his work from the 1960s right up to his present role as a public intellectual.

Professor Eagleton will be interviewed by his colleague John Schad, Professor of Modern Literature at Lancaster. Professor Schad says: “It promises to be an interesting, entertaining and thought-provoking evening covering a whole range of topics. I am really looking forward to having the chance to talk with Terry and it promises to be a fascinating event.’

“As it happens, October 1964 saw not only the beginning of the University of Lancaster, but also of Terry’s career; it was when he became the youngest Junior Research Fellow at Cambridge since the 18th century.’

“The interview, therefore, will range across 50 years, examining not only his highly-distinguished career but university life in general.”

Professor Eagleton was, until 2001, Thomas Wharton Professor of English at the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and has held visiting appointments at such universities as Cornell, Duke, Iowa, Melbourne, Notre Dame, Trinity College Dublin and Yale. He has written around 50 books and is himself the subject of at least two monographs.

The event, which will take place at the University’s LICA building on Tuesday, October 28, gets underway at 7.30pm, with a wine reception from 7pm. There is no need to book in advance, simply attend on the night.
