Lancaster car firm celebrates its sporting past

A motor dealership celebrating its 60th birthday has a link to the history of world championship speedway.

R M Fisher of Galgate was founded 60 years ago by Richard Metcalfe ‘Dick’ Fisher who reached the world speedway final three times.

Dick combined building up his business with a semi-professional career in motorcycle speedway, riding for and captaining top Manchester outfit the Belle Vue Aces in the 1960s.

He rode competitively for Belle Vue for 14 consecutive seasons, rode in 264 National League matches and scored 1797 points, reaching the world finals in 1956, 1963 and 1964. Dick was captain of Belle Vue for three seasons from 1964 to 1966,

Speedway is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit.

Dick and his wife Jean’s family legacy is kept alive at R M Fisher today by their daughter Janet and her husband Brian Hilton, who run the business.

Their son Sam also works at the dealership. The company celebrates its 60th anniversary on February 20.
