Work is taking longer than expected to repair a 700m section of the Lancaster Canal.

The size and extent of the holes in the canal’s bed were larger than expected with the largest being over 1.5 in diameter.

The Canal and River Trust has said work has progressed well with the first eight metre section already being repaired with over 200 tonnes of clay.

Canal and River Trust project manager Graham Ramsden said: “Contractors have brought in additional machinery to speed up the repairs and is working at weekends to complete the work, the canal will be open as soon as possible.”
