Lancaster and Morecambe people in Queen’s New Year Honours List

A Lancaster university professor and a former mayor have been made MBEs in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.

Professor Roger Kemp, who specialises in nuclear safety, and long-serving local politician Jean Yates are among those to receive honours.

Others from the local area to receive MBEs are Trevor Clarke from Carnforth, a leading light in a charity which helps disabled children take part in outdoor education, Christopher Williams from Low Bentham, who works in psychological support services for young people and Eric Rooney from Carnforth, a leading dental consultant.

Alan Hague, a long-time scout leader from the 16th Morecambe scout group and Glenys Lord, domestic services manager at the University of Cumbria in Lancaster, will receive British Empire Medals.

Professor Kemp is a professorial fellow in the engineering department at Lancaster University and receives his MBE for services to engineering.

His research includes the safety regulation of the nuclear industry as well as energy use and safety regulation of transport systems.He also spent several years in Paris as project director of the consortium that designed and built the Eurostar trains.

A former Lancaster city and Lancashire county councillor, Jean Yates was mayor of the district in 1994/95.

Ms Yates, from Heysham, is also an Honorary Alderman of the district and stood in the General Election for Labour in Morecambe and Lunesdale in 1992. She has been awarded the MBE for political service and service to the community of Lancashire.

Trevor Clarke is principal of the Bendrigg Trust, a charitable trust based in Old Hutton, Kendal, offering residential and day activity courses for groups of disabled people.

Mr Clarke has been recognised for services to disabled and disadvantaged people through outdoor education.

Christopher Williams is a former teacher and vastly experienced counsellor and therapist who has been recognised for services to special educational needs.

He has worked with relationship counselling charity RELATE and helped set up a training programme for counsellors working with children for bereavement charity CRUSE.

Eric Rooney is a consultant in Dental Public Health for Public Health England.

Last month NHS England appointed him to the role of deputy chief dental officer. Mr Rooney, who qualified as a dentist in 1983, receives the MBE for services to dentistry.

Alan Hague was leader of the 16th Morecambe and Heysham Scout Group, based on Michaelson Avenue in Torrisholme, from 1971 to 1985 and from 1994 to 2014.

Mr Hague has been recognised for services to young people through scouting in Lancashire.

Glenys Lord, who is from Morecambe, heads the domestic services team at the University of Cumbria. Mrs Lord has been honoured for services to higher education.
