The Lancashire folk in New Year Honours list

Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines is among the great and good of Lancashire who have been commended in the 2016 New Year’s Honours List.

The 86-year-old, who was one of the 669 children rescued from the Holocaust by Sir Nicholas Winton in 1939, has been awarded an MBE for her services to music.

Lady Grenfell-Baines, who is a fundraiser and patron for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, who was given the Freedom of Preston earlier this year, spoke of her delight at the royal honour.

She said: “It is a total surprise. I had no idea that my friends had been plotting this for quite a long time.

“I was lost for words when I got the news.

“I have been involved with the Philharmonic Orchestra for nearly 40 years and my aim has always been to encourage people - particularly young people - to give classical music a chance.”

Also recognised with an MBE is Fayyaz Ahmed for his services to interfaith and community cohesion in Preston.

Fayyaz, 42, who grew up in Fishwick and now lives in Ribbleton, is part of Fishwick Rangers, a community organisation which began as has now expanded into a Youth Development Scheme.

The organisation provides interests and activities for young people so they are diverted away from crime and drugs.

Fayyaz, who is married with five sons, said: “It is a huge shock but a great honour to be awarded this.

“I was secretly nominated by one of my colleagues at Fishwick Rangers.

“Fishwick Rangers has now been in existence for 15 years and it was created to promote harmony and community cohesion and safety within the Fishwick area.”

Lancashire Police’s deputy chief constable Andy Rhodes has been given a Queen’s Police Medal in recognition of services to policing.

Mr Rhodes joined Lancashire Constabulary in 1991, beginning his career in what was Western Division. He was later promoted to Chief Superintendent in March 2006 while based at Lancashire Police headquarters.

In 2013, Mr Rhodes led the policing operation, with Greater Manchester Police, for the trial of Dale Cregan and others at Preston Crown Court and more recently he has been the Gold Commander for the policing response to the floods in the county.

Chief Constable Steve Finnigan said: “Andy has more than 24 years’ policing experience and he has been a dedicated and committed officer throughout his service.”

Husband and wife team Damian Broughton and Helen Broughton, co-founders of Danbro, a firm of accountants providing umbrella and limited company services to thousands of contractors and freelancers throughout the UK, have both picked up MBEs. The couple were recognised for their services to small businesses and sole traders and to the community in Lancashire.

Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire Peter Mileham has been awarded an OBE for services to the community in Lancashire.

He was High Sheriff of Lancashire in 2011/12 and is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Central Lancashire.

Peter is also a Citizens in Policing ambassador for Lancashire Police.

Over the years, Peter has served on the boards of the North and West Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, North West Chambers of Commerce and was National President of the British Chambers of Commerce between 2006 and 2008.

Peter is also an ambassador for the Rosemere Foundation, a cancer charity based at the Royal Preston Hospital.

Kathleen Derbyshire, a former Larches councillor in Preston and magistrate, was also awarded an MBE for services to the community in Lancashire.

Prof Roger Kemp, from the Professorial Fellow Engineering Department at the University of Lancaster was awarded an MBE for services to engineering. His research includes the safety regulation of the nuclear industry as well as energy use and safety regulation of transport systems.He also spent several years in Paris as project director of the consortium that designed and built the Eurostar trains.

Trevor Clarke of Carnforth, near Lancaster, was recognised with an MBE for services to disabled and disadvantaged people through outdoor education.

Eric Rooney, consultant in dental public health for Public Health England was awarded an MBE for services to dentistry.

Jean Yates was also honoured with an MBE. Former Lancaster City and Lancashire County councillor Jean was mayor of the district in 1994/95.

She has been awarded the honour for political service and service to the community in Lancashire.

She is also an Honorary Alderman of the district.

Alan Hague, leader of 16th Morecambe and Heysham Scout Group, based in Torrisholme, from 1971 to 1985 and from 1994 to 2014, has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to young people through scouting in Lancashire.

Glenys Lord, from Morecambe, who heads the domestic services team at the University of Cumbria has been honoured with a British Empire Medal for services to higher education.

Canon Derrick Walkden, who lives in Preston and is a Lay Canon of Blacburn Cathedral and a reader, has received a British Empire Medal for services to the community in Preston.

Canon Derrick said: “I am very pleased and rather shocked at this honour.

“I have spent all my life in Preston and it is very important to me so that makes this even more of an honour.”
