Labour wins Westgate by-election

Labour has retained one of the Westgate seats on Lancaster City Council after victory in a by-election.

Ian Clift topped the poll ahead of the Morecambe Bay Independent candidate Roger Dennison, with the UK Independence Party’s Michelle Ogden in third place.

The new councillor replaces his Labour colleague David Smith, who resigned last month to return home to Yorkshire.

Coun Clift is also on Morecambe Town Council.

The other Westgate councillors on Lancaster City Council are Tracy Brown and Claire Cozler, both Labour.

Ian Clift (Labour) 443, Roger Dennison (MBI) 193, Michelle Ogden (UKIP) 183, Daniel Scott Gibbins (Conservative) 178, Louise Sandra Stansfield (Liberal Democrats) 41, Richard Moriarty (Green) 26.
