Kids give thumbs up to Royal Lancaster Infirmary in national survey

Young people scored the services they received at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) as at least nine out of ten in over half the questions they were asked.

The Care Quality Commission’s first ever Children and Young People’s Survey asked nearly 19,000 young people between the ages of 0 and 15, who received inpatient or day case care during July, August and September 2014, a series ofquestions about their experience.

The young people’s parents or carers were also asked for about their experience their opinions.

Topics covered in the survey included pain management, being treated with respect, standards of cleanliness and the quality of information given.

UHMBT, which also runs Furness General in Barrow and Westmorland General in Kendal, was rated as “better” than most other trusts nationally in 12 of the 49 applicable questions, in areas such as, young people feeling safe in hospital; staff knowing how to care for individual or special needs; staff agreeing a plan for the child’s care with the parents or carers; parents and carers feeling staff kept them informed; staff explaining information in a way parents and carers could understand; and parents and carers feeling they had been given information about what to do if they had concerns when they took their child home.

The Trust was found to be “about the same” as other trusts nationally in the remaining 37 applicable questions, with no questions rated as “worse” than the majority of other trusts.
