Eighty jobs could be lost as telecoms giant BT plans to close a centre specialising in website design.
Consultation on the closure plan is underway with staff at the BT Directories Ltd Online centre at Lancaster Business Park on Caton Road.
BT has five similar centres across the UK but is proposing to close those at Lancaster and Bradford.
It says affected employees could be offered new jobs in the three remaining centres – if they are happy to move to Dudley, Dundee or Glasgow.
A BT spokeswoman said: “Following a review, BT Directories Ltd Online is proposing to scale back its sales and support operations to improve its operational efficiency and ensure the long term sustainability of the business.
“The proposal is to reduce the number of people employed and to consolidate the sales and operations work at three of our regional sites.
“Lancaster is one of the sites under review. Our sales and support operations at Glasgow, Dundee and Dudley would remain open and any residual work transferred to them.
“We believe this approach will put the business in a much better position to develop and grow in the future.
“We’re currently consulting with our staff in Lancaster about their options in the event the closure goes ahead.”
She added that the consultation would continue into September and that should the closure be confirmed “we will support those people affected and help them to apply for anyalternative vacancies within BT group.”
