Victim Adam Pyle had been drinking with his attacker at his girlfriend’s home in Ashton Road, Morecambe, on April 18 last year before the near-lethal argument started.

He had to be resuscitated in the ambulance and was left with a deep V-shaped scar.

Father-of-one Gareth Hughes, 29, of Greenset Close, Lancaster, admitted unlawful wounding.

Wearing jeans and a black hoodie, he fought back tears at Preston’s Sessions House court as Recorder Berkson jailed him for 15 months.

He said: “The use of a weapon in a violent incident is a significant and serious matter that means only immediate custody can be imposed.”

Prosecuting, Lucy Wright said: “An argument ensued between the parties and at some point another lady came into the house. That was an incendiary and during the argument he accepts he picked up a glass, threw it in the direction of Mr Pyle and the glass smashed when it hit Mr Pyle’s face and caused significant injuries. He required a large amount of blood and had to be given a blood transfusion due to the large loss of blood.”

The court heard Hughes has 15 convictions for 23 offences on his record.

In a statement, the victim said he had been left suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder and had been referred for counselling.

He said he found it “more difficult to bear” because he considered the defendant one of his best friends.

Defending Hughes, who has been alcoholic since the age of 14, Christopher Evans said: “It is regrettable as it involves someone he considered as his closest friend.”
