Irish ambassador gives EU views in Morecambe

Daniel Mulhall gave his views to business people and councillors at a breakfast meeting at the Globe Arena, home of Morecambe Football Club, on Monday.

In a thought-provoking talk organised by the Forward in Europe group, Mr Mulhall said the EU had been very good for British-Irish relations and trade and for peace and stability in Northern Ireland.

“We like the influence the UK brings to bear on European affairs,” he said.

The ambassador, 60, who has been in the post since 2013, pointed out that less than 1% of Britain’s gross domestic product was paid into the budget of the EU.

However, he accepted that the EU needed reform.

Answering questions, he did not think the rest of Europe would agree to further EU negotiations with Britain if the referendum decided against staying in.

Mr Mulhall was welcomed and thanked by Michael Mumford, Chair of Forward in Europe.

He also paid a visit to Heysham Port.
