On their Twitter page Highways England tweeted earlier today. Monday, July 30: “#M6 Lancashire. There’ll be an 8pm to 6am overnight closure of the southbound M6 tonight between Js 33 and 32. We’re adding extra protection to the temp column we installed last week after the bridge strike incident.

“Diversion from junction 33 down the A6 to junction 1 M55.”

Part of the M6 near Lancaster and Morecambe was closed for more than 24 hours last week after an HGV collided with a bridge, causing safety fears.

The road was closed in both directions between J33 (Galgate) and J32 (Broughton) last Thursday morning after emergency services deemed the bridge unsafe.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the driver of the lorry was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Motorists suffered long delays, with many stranded on the M6 for much of the day while others queued in diversions along the A6 and other minor routes.

The road was finally opened at around 9.30am on Friday, after the lorry had been removed from the scene and checks had been made on the southbound carriageway to make sure a temporary column was safe.
