A spokesman for Lancashire County Council, said: “We have carried out excavations to investigate the cause of the collapse and are satisfied that it’s not due to the structure of the road or the drains.

“We’ve asked United Utilities to attend the site to establish whether it could be due to a problem with the sewer pipe.”

A spokesman for United Utilities said the sinkhole was due to a sewer collapse and repairs would take place within the next 14 days.

Sinkholes are often caused by an abnormal amount of water seeping into the ground, but can be difficult to predict.
