The golf club, on Middleton Road, along with Black’s Finest Fish and Chips, which is located on the High Road, in Halton, clubbed together to hold the charity day to support cancer patients and their families.

Each year at Heysham Golf Club the captain and lady captain individually select a charity to support, however, this year both agreed CancerCare deserved their joint backing.

Lady captain Jan Savage said: “Some of our members have benefitted directly from the work of the charity, and the difference it has made to their lives is simply amazing.

“It was clear to us that as a club we should make every effort to raise as much money as possible for CancerCare.”

The club held a programme of events including competitions, open days, quizzes, raffles and functions.

The most recent of these was a ceilidh, a traditional gathering of folk music, held on Saturday June 6, with music from Corner Stone ceilidh band.

Tickets to the dance were sold for admission and a pie supper, with all proceeds going straight to the charity.

Black’s Finest Fish and Chips donated their entire stock of pies and supplied peas and gravy for the pie supper.

Owner Matthew Black learned of the ceilidh through his mother who is a member at the club.

Matthew said: “We initially planned to donate some vouchers for the raffle, but we realised that we were able to do much more.

“We really wanted the ceilidh to raise the most money possible, and taking care of the catering expenses was the best way we could think of for our little business to help.”

Several golf club members volunteered to help prepare the pies in the golf clubs kitchen.

Jan said: “We are very proud of the hard work and support of our members and would like to sincerely thank Black’s Chippy for their generous contribution to the evening.”

So far this year the golf club has raised more than £1,000 for CancerCare and there are many more fund raising activities planned for the rest of the year.

Local charity CancerCare has spent more than three decades providing specialised services to cancer patients and their families.

These much needed services include respite care, counselling and holistic therapies. Through their support whole families are able to adjust to often traumatic changes cancer brings.

CancerCare is funded almost exclusively through donations.
