Heavy rainfall delays completion of M6 link junction

The A683 from Northgate (Honda) to Morecambe Road (McDonalds) has been fully closed since July 2015 to construct the carriageway improvements for the new junctions of Hadrian Road, Morecambe Road and Northgate with the A683 as part of the new link road to the M6.

A section of Northgate has also been closed in one direction from Eastgate (Tops Tiles) to Newgate (Bookers), with one lane open to traffic flowing in the direction of ASDA.

This facilitated space needed for the full-depth reconstruction of the Northgate/A683 junction which was added to the scope of works when engineers discovered the junction was in need of additional repairs.

Costain Construction Manager, Richard Helme said “We had hoped to have completed the works by Christmas however the recent wet weather has hampered final surfacing operations.

“We have prioritised completing Northgate and the A683 carriageway upto Mellishaw roundabout in time for Christmas.

“This will open as signal controlled T-junction until we complete the final section from Northgate to Morecambe Road in the new year.”

On Friday December 18 the restrictions on Northgate will be removed.

From Tuesday December 22 the A683 from Northgate to Mellishaw roundabout will reopen once engineers have commissioned the traffic light signals at the Northgate junction.
