Late night live music will play out on Lancaster’s newest landmark later this month.

The new centrepiece in the city’s Market Square will be completed this week, providing a “striking new focal point” for the city centre.

Its primary function will be to provide informal seating but through its artwork will reveal some of Lancaster’s rich history.

It will also serve as a performance and exhibition space, and will feature live music performances over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

As part of the £1m Lancaster Square Routes project, the centrepiece features artwork that comprises ‘A Record of Lancaster’, an imagined greatest hits album for the city, and details nine narratives of Lancaster’s past and present through a series of stylised pictograms, patterns and lyrical track titles which wrap around the centrepiece.

Coun Janice Hanson, cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration and planning, said: “For many years this important civic space has lacked focus but the new centrepiece is a striking statement which celebrates the people, places and events that have helped shape the culture and identity of the city. I hope that people will enjoy discovering more about Lancaster’s hidden treasures and go on to further explore the city and what it has to offer.”
