A spokesman for Morecambe Coastguard said the girl was in pain and they carefully took her across the sands to the Morecambe RNLI hovercraft so she could be taken to the Oakley Road slipway.

She was then assessed at the scene by ambulance crew before being taken to hospital.

The coastguard spokesman described the operation as “successful rescue and superb inter-service team work”.

A spokesman for North West Ambulance said they had no details of the girl’s injuries.
