Former Lancaster police chief dies

Maurice Clark was a former chief inspector at Lancaster police station and served in the force for 31 years.

Maurice was born in the original Captain’s Row in Skerton in 1928 and attended Skerton Secondary School where he was head boy.

His first job was as an accounts clerk with Lunesdale Farmers on the quay. He then did his national service and served in Egypt with the RAF.

After returning home he joined the police force in 1952.

In that same year he married Muriel and they were together for 56 years until she died in 2008.

As a police officer he was stationed in many different towns and cities including Ulverston and Manchester before starting work at Lancaster in 1968. He retired while chief inspector in 1983.

Maurice’s daughter Sharon said her dad was a modest man who didn’t talk much about his career but she recalls that he once got an award for bravery after rescuing somebody who was trapped inside a car which had fallen into a river.

Maurice and Muriel enjoyed a long and happy retirement and loved to go sequence dancing, sometimes five or six nights a week.

Maurice passed away on March 3.

His funeral will be held on March 16 at St Luke’s Church in Lancaster, then at Lancaster and Morecambe Crematorium, then there will be drinks and sandwiches at The Keys in Slyne.
