Network Rail have been replacing the railings and the concrete parapet on Carlisle Bridge in Lancaster and cyclists on the cycle path and walkers had been suffering disruption as a result.

But the new footway is now open on both sides of the river and has been well received so far. The footway had been closed since September 2104 and was originally due to open at Christmas, but was put back until February 22.

Network Rail said the further delay was due to supplier issues with materials needed for the job.

Network Rail apologised for any inconvenience caused by the delays.

Kevin Bannerman said on Facebook: “Just walked over carlisle bridge for the first time since its been done, absolutely amazing, the structure feels very solid, a good thickness to the bars, beautiful tarmac been placed down, great job done! John Walker said on Facebook: “Finally. It would have been quicker to build another bridge than the time its taken to renovate this one.”

Phillip Fawcett, also on Facebook said: “It’s completely open.

“I crossed from one side to the other last night (the thrill!).

“Railings looked good, and the steps have been surfaced with grippy stuff.

“All in all, good job, but should be for how long it took.”

David Kitchin said: “Looks like they’ve made a good job of it.”
