Flying owls wing way round school

He's not quite come of age, but Harry Potter reaching 20 was cause for celebration at Lancaster Girls' Grammar.

The school decided to mark the anniversary by staging a full blown Hogwarts themed event to mark World Book Day.

Staff and students dressed up as characters from the books and a whole range of different events were staged throughout the day.

These included a giant Potter trivia quiz, Niffler treasure hunt, and a cake decorating competition, platforms appeared in the atrium, owls flew around the assembly hall and perched on library shelves while the library contained newspapers which headlined a report about a recent ‘Escape from Azkaban’.

The day was topped off with a visit from Matt Killeen author of Orphan Monster Spy, a debut novel set in 1939, that is already tipped to be a best seller.

Everyone paid to swap their uniforms for Hogwarts’ and all proceeds from the day will go to JK Rowling’s charity, LUMOS, to help children in care throughout the world.

Year eight pupil Karishma Parekh said: “The quiz was really fun to take part in and to see the transformation of the school into Hogwarts was unreal and, for me, the best part was seeing all of the teachers dress up as characters from the books.”
