Flood alerts in place for Lancaster and Morecambe

A flood alert is in place at St George's Quay

The Environment Agency has issued the “flooding is possible, be prepared” alert for St George’s Quay due to south westerly gale force 8 winds on top of a one metre tidal surge.

An alert is also for areas north of Morecambe Bay, including Heysham, where tidal spray and onshore flooding may occur to roads and some properties along the coast being affected.

People are warned to stay away from the coast.

Environment Agency officers are on the ground ensuring defences are in good working order, monitoring sea levels and wind directions.

The tide is forecast to peak between 12pm and 1.30pm.

The remnants of the so-called Storm Jonas that hit the east coast of America at the weekend has made its way across the Atlantic.

The alert is giving an expected peak tidal level of 5.9m at 12.45pm on St George’s Quay.

High water can be expected for two hours before and after the peak.
