A Lancaster woman with a friendship spanning 50 years has made it to the final of a national competition to find the UK’s best friend.

Yvonne Kitching, 57, who was born and bred in Lancaster, has reached the final of the Best Friend of the Year competition after nominating her best friend Sharon Lambert, 58, also aLancastrian.

The two friends first met as eight-year-old next door neighbours in Chestnut Grove, and are now celebrating an incredible 50 years of friendship – without ever sharing a cross word!

The pair have been together through thick and thin, and will be marking the occasion by celebrating with a few drinks down at their local pub, The Freeholders.

The Best Friend of the Year UK competition was launched by Tombola, the sponsor of ITV’s Loose Women, together with the TV show.

Yvonne is one of 12 finalists, selected from more than 350 entries, who are set to be whisked off to London on June 8 – National Best Friend Day – on an all-expenses paid trip to watch the live filming of ITV’s Loose Women.

After the show, Yvonne and the other finalists will enjoy afternoon tea with the Loose Women presenters.

The overall winner will receive an experience day worth £500, to share with his or her best friend.

Yvonne said: “I’m so excited to make the shortlist and can’t wait to meet the Loose Women. I couldn’t think of anyone better to share this with than Sharon”

When it comes to friendship, recent findings in a survey conducted by tombola revealed that in a world where we seem to have many acquaintances, the average number of close friends for a UK adult in Lancaster is four.

People in the north west value loyalty as the most important quality of friendship.
