Farmer (76) killed by cattle: inquest

An inquest has been held into the death of an elderly farmer at his Woodplumpton farm.

Preston Coroner Dr James Adeley recorded a verdict of accidental death for Keith Knowles, 76.

The grandfather-of-four of Lower House Farm, Lewth Lane, was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital on the morning of September 7, after being knocked unconsious by cattle. He died later in hospital.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was informed and launched an investigation.

A spokesman for the HSE said the investigation was still open and no decisions had been made.

It is believed that the Knowles family has farming records dating back 700 years in Lancashire.

News of the tragedy shocked the local farming and church community as Mr Knowles was a retired churchwarden of St Lawrence Church, Barton, and described as a devout Christian.

At the time of Mr Knowles’ death, retired Fellside Team Rector Rev Jeff Finch said: “Keith was a very loyal and dedicated churchwarden over many years, always supported by his wife Brenda and well respected. He was a very quiet and industrious worker.

“To all the clergy who served in the Fellside he has always been immensely loyal and supportive.

“He will be sadly missed and also greatly missed in the farming community.”
