Capsticks on White Lund closed recently and whilst the owners have moved out, rats have moved in.

A regular passerby, who did not wish to be named, said: “Nothing is being done about the rats. I saw two dead rats and at least 15 crawling all over the place. There is the health issue and all the other businesses in the area are going to suffer. It can’t be left like this.”

Coun Karen Leytham, Cabinet member with responsibility for Environmental Health, said: “The Capstick site on Middlegate closed recently, leaving behind an untidy site with large quantities of accumulated waste materials.

“The city council has received reports that the site is now infested with rats.

“While access to the site cannot be obtained, the council has provided precautionary rat treatments, free of charge, to neighbouring premises in order to control the rat population and minimise the impact of the site’s closure on local businesses.

“The city council is liaising with the Environment Agency.”
