Parts of Morecambe Bay have been placed on flood alert ahead of strong winds and high tides.

People on the North Lancashire and South Cumbria coasts are being warned of potential disruption on Friday and throughout the weekend.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert - meaning flood is possible - for the northern Morecambe Bay shoreline at Arnside and the coast off Barrow-in-Furness.

A spokesman said the high tide at 11.50pm tonight, Friday, was expected to be above the Flood Alert level and experts were monitoring the situation.

‘Yellow’ level ‘be prepared’ warnings have also been given by the Met Office, which predicts strong winds and rain until at least Sunday morning.

Snow could fall over higher ground in parts of Cumbria.

Winds are set to increase on Saturday to between 50mph and 60mph - but gusts of 70mph could batter more exposed areas.

Police have urged people to take care and stay away from promenades and piers “for their own safety”.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said heavy rain on already saturated ground would heighten the risk of river and surface water flooding across the region.
