Parts of the Heysham Bypass will close for 18 months on Monday to allow major roadworks to take place.

The roundabout at the junction of the A683 and Morecambe Road, also known as McDonalds roundabout, is due to be replaced with a new traffic light led junction.

Heysham M6 Link Road builders Costain will carry out the work in four phases from Monday, June 9, until December 2015.

But the Lancaster and District Chamber of Commerce said Costain and Lancashire County Council had failed to consult with businesses and had other options available. Vicky Lofthouse, chamber manager said: “We fully understand that the construction of such a major road will cause a certain amount of disruption and in general businesses are tolerant to this. On this occasion Costain and Lancashire County Council failed to consult with local businesses to ensure minimum disruption to travel in the area.

“Other gateways to White Lund are already under pressure during peak times of the day and alternative options must be considered.

“The Chamber recognises the importance of the M6 Link Road and the economic gains to be had, but as with anything there are other options and these need to be considered in this case.”

A spokesman for Costain said traffic management measures have been agreed in consultation with the police, county and city councils.

He added: “The entire carriageway will be reconstructed. Access to Hadrian Road will be maintained during the creation of a link leading up to the new junction.

“Traffic entering and exiting the Hadrians estate (as well as McDonalds’ exiting traffic) with be taken up to a give-way junction onto Morecambe Road.”

The other changes are;

· The Heysham Bypass will only allow one-way traffic from Lancaster on a single lane carriageway from Morecambe Road Junction to the Mellishaw Lane roundabout.

· There will be no right turn onto the Heysham Bypass for traffic heading out of Morecambe on Morecambe Road, drivers must continue along Morecambe Road to the ASDA roundabout and take Ovangle Road for Heysham.

· Traffic from the Heysham bypass will be diverted at the Mellishaw Lane roundabout and sent along Ovangle Road.
