A MAJOR pipeline sprung a leak this week, causing a dramatic scene near the Crook o’ Lune.

Peter Hearne, who lives near the pipeline, witnessed the spectacular tower of water that rose up next to a pumping station and bridge in the early hours of Tuesday.

He said: “The leak was on the Caton side of the river. I could see it from quite a distance away. It was like a geyser.”

United Utilities engineers spent several hours trying to fix the leak to the pipeline, which is one of four that transports millions of litres from Thirlmere to Manchester every day.

A spokesman from United Utilities said they were alerted to the incident at around 7am by a farmer working nearby.
