ENGINEERS are working to stop untreated sewage entering the sea at Morecambe Bay.

But United Utilities said it could take at least three weeks to resolve the problem.

Difficulties arose when a pipe at the Middleton wastewater works, which releases treated sewage out to sea, became buried by moving sandbanks on Friday, October 28.

United Utilities has temporarily diverted the water through an old pipe to prevent flooding but it is receiving only preliminary treatment, so Lancaster City Council has closed the mussel beds and is urging people not to eat shellfish from the bay or the Lune Estuary.
