An adult student has won a European award for her enthusiasm and commitment to learning.

Claire Whalley, aged 23, from Morecambe, was influenced by her support worker to start learning again.

She now has a level three Skills for Employment Award and has studied business and administration.

Claire, who has learning difficulties, is currently volunteering at Heysham Children’s Centre to develop her customer service skills, working on reception and answering phone calls.

She has won a European Social Fund Individual Learner Award in the North West as part of Adult Learners’ Week May 18 to 24.

Claire’s tutor, Pam Cole, said: “Claire now feels her week is busy and purposeful. Longer term she hopes to move to independent living and gain an apprenticeship.” Claire will receive her award at a regional ceremony this Thursday, May 23.
