Drunk woman's foul-mouthed rampage

A woman launched a foul-mouthed tirade at a taxi firm employee while throwing chairs around the office.

Wigan magistrates heard Tina Berry, of Anson Street, abused the operator at Blue Star Taxis on Wallgate and hurled furniture during an early hours incident.

The court was told Berry, 28, was so drunk she had been treated by paramedics earlier and made her way to the office to get a taxi by walking up the middle of the road waving her arms around, causing vehicles to swerve or stop to avoid her.

When the police arrived at Blue Star Berry was flicking food onto the floor from two pizza boxes and still being abusive, swearing at the officers as they approached and restrained her.

Prosecuting, John Richards said Berry was so inebriated that at one point she ended up on the ground as the officers led her from the premises, she then screamed hysterically as she was put in the police van.

Berry, who was unrepresented in court, originally tried to deny being drunk and disorderly but changed her plea after being informed by the court clerk that the whole incident was captured on CCTV and a trial would cost her a lot of money if found guilty. Berry claimed a taxi driver refused to allow her into the vehicle when she arrived at the office but was sternly lectured that this was no excuse for her behaviour.

She told the court she had been drinking in Wigan for several hours and there was an altercation at Blue Star which led her to start shouting due to her drunken state. Justices gave Berry a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered her to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
