COMMUTERS faced severe delays in Lancaster city centre this morning after an HGV broke down, blocking the southbound one-way system.

Traffic was left queueing back as far as Caton Road, close to junction 34 of the M6, after the lorry broke down at the lights on the corner of Thurnham Street and South Road at around 7.45am.

Drivers turning right back into the city centre were ushered down George Street and Spring Garden Street by traffic officers.

By 9.10am traffic was moving and police were escorting a recovery vehicle to the scene.
