When the man opened the door, the offender pushed past him, made his way to the lounge and stole a handbag belonging to the elderly man's wife.

The handbag contained the cross and gold rosary beads.

A Lancashire Constabulary spokesman said: "The cross is of great sentimental value and would mean a great deal to the owner if it were recovered.

"It is very distinctive due to its size, described as being two-and-a-half inches tall. Also stolen were gold rosary beads.

"Any information leading to the recovery of these items would be very much appreciated."
