A MAN has gone on trial accused of causing the deaths of a Lancaster couple in a car crash in Scotland.

Joan and Steven Machell, both 63, died after their car collided with a vehicle driven by Kevin McCrindle on the A75 from Gretna to Dumfries.

McCrindle, 37, of Grieve Walk in Dumfries, denies a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

He also denies driving at an excessive speed for “prevailing conditions” and going on to the wrong side of the road in an attempt to overtake other cars.

Dr Joan Machell was an education research fellow at Lancaster University, while her husband had been a design and technology teacher at Baines School in Poulton.
