A Lancaster man has been sent to jail for five years for sexually assaulting a woman in Morecambe.

Carn Burke, 24, of Mount Avenue in the city, was given the prison term at Preston Crown Court.

The court heard Burke, while in a drunken state, approached a 22-year-old woman on Pedder Street and sexually assaulted her.

It happened in the early hours of March 31 this year.

PC Gillian Topping, of Lancaster CID, said: “Given the level of mental distress sexual offences can cause victims, it is important the public know we take offences like this very seriously, and will always look to prosecute sexual offenders.

“Offences of this nature are never acceptable, and drunkenness is neither an excuse nor a defence for such reprehensible actions.”
