A firework was thrown into a student’s room at Lancaster University in what police are treating as an arson.

Officers said that at around 11pm on Monday, November 4, a woman sleeping in her accommodation in the Lonsdale College block was woken by noise.

A “repeating firework” had been thrown into her room.

It is believed it had been thrown via a window.

All eight residents in the block had to be evacuated as a result.

The other seven students were allowed back into their rooms the next day, but the affected student’s room was treated for fire damage.

PC Ben Rooke said the firework caused “a lot of damage and disruption”. He added: “This is an act of recklessness that could have had serious consequences.

“I am appealing to any person who has any information to contact me.

“You can ring 101 and leave a message for PC 2499 Rooke or call anonymously on the Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111.”
